American Welfare Association

Committed to Reducing Pet Overpopulation

NOTE:  The AWA Clinic will be closed on Monday, July 5.  There will be no vaccination clinic or surgeries that day.  The next vaccination day will be Saturday, July 10.

The Animal Welfare Association operates a low-cost spay/neuter clinic that is open to all members of the public regardless of residence or income.

To schedule surgery for your pet, please download and fill out a spay/neuter check-in form first. After your form is filled out, call to schedule your appointment.

Due to the high demand for appointments at our spay/neuter clinic, we are now offering appointments by email.  After supplying us with the following information, we will schedule you for the NEXT AVAILABLE APPOINTMENT for your pet.  If the date is convenient for you, please email confirmation back to us within 48 hours to secure your appointment.  If you submit the online surgery appointment form, please do not call the clinic.  We will email you back as soon as possible with the appointment day.

SPECIAL OFFER!  If you make an appointment online, you'll receive a free nail clipping for your pet at the time of surgery!

RESCUE FIX (Shelters and Rescue Groups)

AWA partners with the community to provide subsidized services for low-income pet owners and rescue groups.  This program gives shelter animals another chance for adoption into their loving, forever homes.

Helping Hand Surgery - Through "Helping Hand Surgery", the AWA can provide an affordable surgical option for shelter and rescue organizations that don't have the resources for surgery at a full-service veterinary hospital.  Examples of surgeries included in this program are tumor removals, hernias, wound repairs, ear hematomas, entropions, enucleations and other eye surgeries.

Prior to the surgery, the shelter/rescue organization will need to bring the complete medical records (including any blood work, X-rays, etc.) from their veterinarian and the animal to the AWA for an evaluation ($30.00 exam fee).  The AWA's veterinarian will determine if surgery at the AWA is possible.  At the time of the exam, the fee for surgery, anesthesia and any necessary medications will be discussed.

You can trust us:

The Animal Welfare Association clinic is staffed by licensed veterinarians and skilled technicians. The only types of surgeries we do are spays and neuters, and we perform more of these surgeries than any other organization in the South Jersey region.  In 2002 we celebrated our 100,000 spay/neuter surgery and we perform over 9000 procedures each year.

Feral cats:

Yes, our technicians are skilled at handling feral cats for surgery. Feral cats that are caught in traps should be brought to the shelter in the trap and will be returned to you in a carrier provided by you. Many hardware and rental stores rent or sell humane traps. Absorbable sutures are available so that no return visit is needed.

Rescue and shelters:

Yes, we do offer even further reduced rates for legitimate rescue and shelter operations. You must present your group's 501(c)3 designation at time of surgery.  For more information, please contact the clinic at 856-424-2288 extension 105. Leave your contact information and the name of your group and a staff member or volunteer will return your call.

For all surgery appointments, please remember:

  • Drop-off time is between 7:15 a.m. and 8:00 a.m.
  • Payment is due at drop-off.  CASH and exact change is requested, please.
  • Bring prior vaccination records.  Distemper and rabies vaccinations require a certificate, not a tag, with the date of last vaccinations.
  • All cats must be in a carrier.  Feral cats in traps must be covered and will need a carrier for after surgery.
  • All dogs must be on a leash.  Please walk dogs before entering the building.
  • Adult animals (older than 6 months) may not have food after 6:00 p.m. the night before surgery.
  • Young animals (younger than 6 months) may not have food after 12:00 midnight the night before surgery.
  • Water is okay to be given the night before and the morning of surgery.
