Volunteer at AWA

Thank you for your interest in volunteering for Animal Welfare Association!  We are proud to have the support of so many wonderful volunteers. These dedicated people put their concern for animal welfare into action by donating their time, talents and energy.

Our volunteers help in three main program areas of the organization. Volunteers assist on-site in our pet shelter and clinic, within our community through outreach programs and special events, and by becoming a foster parent.

Volunteer Opportunities:
On-site volunteers assist in both animal handling and clerical roles. Tasks range from helping in our laundry room, answering phones, making enrichment toys, sorting donations, walking our dogs, cuddling with our cats and nurturing our bunnies. To ensure that the volunteer experience is a safe and enjoyable experience for all, our program has different training levels.

*Any student wishing to fulfill a time requirement solely for service hours or an honor society should not apply to be a volunteer. Please submit a “Service Weeks for High School Students” application instead.

*Court ordered community service volunteers are not tracked through our general volunteer program so all inquiries should be directed to our Shelter Manager at

Time commitment:
Volunteers are required to attend an orientation before volunteer service can begin. Orientations are held on the 1st  Monday and Tuesday of each month from 6:00-7:30pm and the 3rd Tuesday of each month from 6:00-7:30pm. We will meet at the shelter at 6pm sharp to begin the walk through and then go down to the clinic for the Orientation presentation. This session is invite only and spots are limited so please allow 2 weeks for your application to be received and for the invitation to be sent out to you.

New Volunteers: All volunteers have the option to purchase a “Volunteer Starter Kit” for $10. The kit will contain an AWA Volunteer t-shirt and an ID badge. Volunteer t-shirts for $7 and ID badges for $5 are also available separately. This covers AWA’s cost only. T-shirts are optional,  ID badges are required and are to be worn by ALL volunteers while volunteering at AWA.  ID badges identify volunteers by name and reflect the completed levels of training. Please bring cash or a check with you at the time of Orientation to purchase these items.

Current AWA volunteers: Volunteers have the option of purchasing a volunteer tee shirt for $7. Replacement ID badges are $3. Volunteers MUST have an ID badge on while volunteering at AWA. E-mail if you would like to purchase a volunteer shirt or need a replacement badge.

Children and on-site volunteering:
Those who are 16 or 17 years old may volunteer independently with written consent from a parent. Volunteers aged 12-15 may volunteer with a parent or guardian present at all times who also attended orientation. Children younger than 12 may become involved through Humane Education, attending our Summer Camp, or by soliciting donations in our Trash to Treasure program.
