Recently, we had the incredible honor of hosting the ASPCA Shelter Medicine residents for an afternoon visit to AWA. These dedicated veterinarians are in the midst of a rigorous three-year residency program, working toward becoming boarded specialists in shelter medicine – a field that combines veterinary expertise with a deep understanding of animal sheltering. Their visit was a wonderful opportunity for us to share our work, our space, and our mission, and we were thrilled to be a part of their educational journey.
Shelter medicine residency programs are unique and vital. They not only cover topics like infectious disease management but also provide a broad education in animal sheltering practices. By visiting shelters across the country, these residents gain firsthand insight into the challenges and opportunities different organizations face and learn innovative ways to serve communities and animals. Their visit to AWA was a part of this holistic, boots-on-the-ground training, and we were so excited to contribute to their learning experience.
The afternoon began with a tour of our shelter, where we showcased the ins and outs of our facility, including our animal housing areas, medical spaces, and the heart of it all – our bustling adoption and outreach programs. From the wagging tails in our kennels to the life-saving work happening in our clinic, we gave them a comprehensive look at what makes AWA such a special place.
But the visit wasn’t just about seeing the physical space – it was about sharing stories and strategies. We discussed the many ways AWA serves our community, from adoption and fostering to spay/neuter services, pet food pantry programs, and humane education initiatives. Shelter medicine is about much more than treating animals; it’s about understanding how shelters like ours integrate into the community, addressing not just the needs of pets but also the people who love them.
This visit wasn’t just a professional development opportunity for the residents – it was a chance for us to reflect on and celebrate the work we do every day. Showing off our programs and facility gave us a moment to take pride in the impact we’ve had on animals and families. It also allowed us to connect with the next generation of shelter medicine leaders, learning from their fresh perspectives and answering their thoughtful questions.
We were so proud to host the ASPCA Shelter Medicine residents and share in such a meaningful exchange of ideas and experiences. Together, we’re all working toward the same goal: creating a world where every animal is cared for, loved, and given a chance to thrive. What a memorable afternoon it was for both our guests and the AWA team.
